Jack Elam Zsculpt

I did a quick zbrush sculpt of crazy looking actor Jack Elam.  The hair looked really terrible so I painted over it in photoshop.  Maybe some day i'll go back and fix this up.

Darksiders I Cut Boss

This is a Boss I started sculpting years ago for Darksiders I.  It was cut from the game because they just didn't have time to add it.  I decided I might as well try to pose it.  I'll probably touch it up a bit and maybe do some texture work on it too.  You can see the amazing concepts done by Paul Richards right here. http://www.autodestruct.com/ds_bosses.htm

Primate RPG

This was a doodle I was messing around with on Substrata.  I took some of the archetypes in fantasy rpg games and made them different primates.  There's a gorilla barbarian, a orangutan sorcerer, a chimpanzee knight, and a lemur archer.  Its done in pencil and ink.  It didn't really come out how I envisioned it, but was fun to do.  I'd totally play a goofy fantasy game like this, maybe they're fighting against the evil human horde or something.

Star Nosed Mole-Man finished

Finally finished this guy and submitted it for the Substrata art book.  This was supposed to be a quick sculpt, but I ended up spending a long time on it.  I polypainted him in zbrush and then did some touchup work in photoshop.

Star Nosed Mole Posing

Did some more sculpting work and then used transpose master to start to pose him.  I had the layer button checked when I did this so it created a new layer on each subtool.  This way I can always go back to the unposed version.

 polypainting....

added a new shoulder pad and other stuff.

Star Nosed Mole Sculpting

The deadline was extended for the Substrata book so I'll try to sculpt my star nosed moleman for it.  I also threw on some polypaint really quick on his face.  Its fun working on the slimy face, but its gonna suck to sculpt all that hair...

....edit
originally was just gonna do a bust, but ended up working on the whole body.  i'll also try to do the shovel/axe.  here's a little update.

Star Nosed Mole

Here's a drawing I'm working on of a star nosed mole creature that is a guard for an underground mole civilization or something.  I started this for the Substrata book, I'm also working on a sculpt of his face in zbrush.  Hope he doesn't end up looking like zoidberg.

edit..........
another wip, updated his armor to be made out of insect parts, including a sexy centipede skirt.

Vermicious Knid Sculpt wip

I spent some time at a coffee shop sculpting this guy this weekend.  someone left a wacom tablet there a couple weeks ago and one of the people working there tried to give it to me, but i don't really need another one.  what kind of idiot loses a wacom tablet?  i can understand losing a pen.

this guy is looking pretty rough, but i wanted to get all  4 of the willy wonka monsters started, before i really finished one of them.  i'm also working on the oopma loompa sculpt.

edit.... didn't like the look of his face so i did a paintover of some changes i might make.

edit #2..........  after i did the paintover i thought it would be funny if he was giving the finger with the hand on his tail.

Substrata

I'm taking part in Paul Richard's fantasy art book project called Substrata.  http://www.autodestruct.com/substrata.htm

I'm working on a lost, old man with no memory and a big hole in his head.  I'm thinking he was a spelunker and found something underground that lead to this.  I'm just making it up as i go.  I did a sketch of him and his mount and I'm starting some zsculpts and paintovers to refine the design.  i'll also work on his weapons, his arch enemy, and some creatures hopefully.

Oompa Loompa Doopidy Doo

It was nice outside, so I sat in my backyard and sketched some oompa loompas.  None of the sketches really grab me, but I'll use then as reference when i sculpt it in zbrush and pick out parts I like from the different sketches.  I didn't really want to base them much off the movies, the book mentioned they wore deer skin clothes and had crazy hair.

I also sketched out the rotten vermicious knid.  he's got a tail with a hand at the end to grab oompa loompas by the head and then toss them in his mouth.

Whangdoodling

Here's a little more work on the Whangdoodle, a monster that was mentioned in the Willy Wonka movie because it eats oompa loompas .  In my design he uses his smaller arms to dislocate his jaw to open his mouth wide, and then throws in oopa loompas using his big arms.

I sculpted it in zbrush and did a little polypainting , then I started painting it over in photoshop to get some ideas how i might fix it up.

Raised by Robots

Here's something I drew in Photoshop based on the idea of an abandoned kid being raised by some robots, sort of like Tarzan but with robots instead of apes.  I wonder if we'll have robots taking care of babies and old people any time soon.  Maybe I'll have my own personal robot to change my diapers when I'm old and senile :)

Wolverine Sculpt and Polypaint

I'm calling this done.  I could definitely fix some of this up, but it was meant to be a quick study.  I also wanted to keep it loose like the paintings it was based off of by Kent Williams.  The texture was polypainted using zapplink so i could paint in photoshop.  I used the skin4 matcap and made 2 more versions of it, one with a higher specular value, and the other with a lower spec value.  The low spec I used for his clothes, and i added the high spec version on areas like his nose, cheeks, claws, and shoulders.  rendered with bpr in zbrush

Wolverine Sculpt

Taking part in the polycount art jam,  topic is comic books.  working on a version of wolverine based on the comic Havoc and Wolverine Meltdown.  it was a collaboration between artists Jon Jay Muth and Kent Williams in 1988.  Kent painted wolverine and Jon painted havok.

its still very early on, and looking pretty crappy.  it will be interesting trying to get the crazy hair to look good. i plan to polypaint it too.

update.....................
worked on it some more this weekend.  i think i'll keep the sculpt pretty rough with brush strokes still visible, sort of like how the paintings are.  i think i need to thin him out to match the comic better.  i've done some polypaint but its not worth showing yet.(looks like a dead guy with makeup on)

More Willy Wonka monsters

here's a wip of the textures i'm doing for the hornswoggler.  he's rendered in vray using the fast sss2 material, and then some touchup work in photoshop.  I'm working on the Snozwanger sculpt which is really early on.  he's got an extra set of small legs that he only uses when he's fighting to brace himself or something.  i also started sketching oompa loompas for them to eat, but nothing worth showing.

Hornswoggler WIP

I've done some more work on this sculpt, lots of it was boring behind the scenes stuff.  I retopologized him and uv'd him so I can do a proper texture for him.  I also have his lowest subdivision rigged in 3dsmax so  I can pose him and then export an obj, and import it on a new layer in zbrush.  the render on the right is a quick test pose I did just to make sure it works.

update.......
trying to figure out how to render him in 3dsmax using vray. its just a basic vray material, i'll try an sss material and textures next.

Even Moar Darksiders II stuff

Here are some of the last things I did for Darksiders II.  The Hunter is a character in the Demon Lord Belial DLC.  His hands and face were started from a sculpt by Brian Jones.  I didn't change his hands much, but i changed his face quite a bit.  I did the Low poly and texture of the Death DLC armor set. The highpoly was done by Jeremy Klein.  You can see it here http://cghub.com/images/view/381122/  The face, hair and skin were done by Brian Jones.
